ksu excellence in action 2008 Topics in Child development conference: Autism

Children playingThe seventh annual Topics in Child Development Conference: Effective Use of Behavioral Interventions for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders will be held at Kent State University on June 26 and June 27. The conference will focus on behavioral approaches to intervention that can assist in enhancing existing skills and building new skills to promote success across multiple settings. Regional, state, and national leaders in autism spectrum disorders will provide strategies, insights, and research-based information valuable to implementing an assessment driven model of intervention.

The Thursday, June 26, evening session from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Kent State Student Center is for families of children with autism spectrum disorders and will feature Dr. Nevada Reed from KidsLink Neurobehavioral Center speaking on Understanding How Medications Work and Collaborating with Teams to Make Them Effective.

The Friday, June 29, conference from 8:30 to 4:00 in the Kent State Student Center will feature Dr. V. Mark Durand, from the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. Dr. Durand will address the topic of Functional Communication Training to Reduce and Prevent Challenging Behavior.

Additionally, there will be many breakout sessions on topics including positive behavioral supports, cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety, self-regulation skills, stronger IEP development, executive functioning, group socialization, medication management, and optimistic parenting.  A complete listing of the sessions is featured under "Conferences" at www.ehhs.kent.edu/PDO. A Resource Room with vendors and agencies will also be available both days to provide materials and information in the autism realm.
