Physical Education Major

Exercise Sciences - Requirements

This program emphasizes scientific theory, research and application to variety of human movement, exercise and fitness issues and problems. Two options are available: exercise physiology and exercise specialist. Graduates of the program pursue advanced degrees in exercise sciences or work in clinical or applied settings such as hospitals, cardiac rehabilitation centers and physical fitness agencies and programs.

Human Movement Studies - Requirements

This concentration affords students the opportunity to individualize an area of study through a liberal approach to education. A minor is required (e.g., athletic coaching, biology, psychology, sports management, sports medicine, etc.) and students select courses in sport studies to support their areas of interest or for preparation for a related profession such as athletic coaching, or physical or occupational therapy. Graduates of this concentration pursue graduate degrees in motor behavior and development, sport psychology and sports medicine or work in clinical settings.

Teacher Education - Requirements

The teacher education concentration prepares students for careers as licensed physical education teachers for children and youth (kindergarten through grade 12). The professional program requires a 2.50 GPA for all coursework at Kent State and a 2.75 GPA in the major for declaration of an education minor, student teaching and graduation. The teacher education curriculum is accredited by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Health and Physical Education - Requirements

Students can pursue multi-age licensure to teach both Health and Physical Education. These students must maintain a major and cumulative GPA of 2.75. This is a five-year undergraduate program requiring completion of 164 credit hours.

Recreation, Park and Tourism Management Major

The Recreation, Park and Tourism Management program is accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association.

Recreation and Park Management - Requirements

Students in this concentration complete internships and pursue careers in community recreation, public parks, corporate recreation/fitness, correctional recreation, military recreation, senior centers, youth sports, and non-profit organizations such as Young Men's and Women's Christian Associations. Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to become Certified Park and Recreation Professionals through the National Recreation and Park Association.

Tourism Management - Requirements

The focus of this concentration is on tourism service management and sustainable destination development. A business administration minor is built into this concentration. Career opportunities are available in resorts, theme parks, outdoor adventures, special events, convention and visitors bureaus, regional planning, and eco tourism.

Sport Administration Major

Sport Administration - Requirements

The Sport Administration major prepares students for careers in the sport industry through a balanced academic program and numerous practical experiences. Students complete a core group of courses developed to exceed accreditation guidelines, and all students are required to complete the business minor. The curricular balance of sport, business and sociological courses along with three required practical experiences make the program of study one that is cutting edge, particularly when compared to other programs within the State of Ohio and across the country.

Upon completion of the major, students will have the opportunity to pursue numerous career paths in the sport industry such as, managing sport programs at all levels (youth, high school, collegiate, and professional), facility management, event planning, sport marketing and public relations.
